Self-Examination

Dec 29, 2024    Matthew Holcomb

These 7 self-examination questions are helpful for every believer to ask ourselves as we regularly come to the table.

1 – Have I redeemed the time that the Lord has given me today? How much of it have I wasted in unnecessary rest and ease, idle imagination, fruitless discussion, or preoccupation with the world?

2 – How have I prayed throughout this day? Has my prayer been passionate, filled with joy in God’s mercies, or with anguish over sin, or sorrow for a brother? Or, has it rather been routine and dull or non-existent? God’s will for me is to rejoice always, pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks. What do my prayers today say about my heart?

3 – Have I neglected or been careless in reading God’s holy Word? Have I prayed over it? Have I considered its commands, promises, or warnings, or examples I am to follow. If not, what things have I prioritized over God's life-giving instruction? What do those things bring me?

4 – Have I poured myself out for Gods church? It is Christ’s bride, the means by which Gods gospel is proclaimed, by which I am being sanctified, and in which God is being glorified. Have I made it the priority it ought to be?

5 – In what ways have I denied myself for the sake of others?

6 – Do I live in something that I know or fear to be sin? I must confess it and repent of it, for truly God is not mocked, what a man sows, that he will reap.

7 – Am I grieved over sin in this world? Am I grieved over sin in my heart?
