What This Woman Has Done

Feb 22, 2026    Jon Paul Dennison

Mary of Bethany, the woman always found at Jesus' feet, had kept her alabaster jar to anoint Him for burial. She hadn't even broken it when her brother Lazarus died weeks before.

Though what she had done was one of the most sacrificial and generous acts of worship in all the gospels, she was rebuked by all the disciples for her "waste," and told she should have given the proceeds to the poor, even by Judas Iscariot of all people.

As true disciples of Christ, our worship will be misunderstood and at times rebuked, even by those who seem to following Christ, or perhaps are. It will be enough for us to be like Him in being misunderstood in our devotion, even if it be by those we know and love.
