Article 48 of the First London Confession demonstrates the legitimacy of the civil magistrate as an appointed servant of God to punish evil and praise good. Outside of necessity to sin, believers are to live in subjection to this ordinance of God for the purposes of avoiding unnecessary wrath, keeping a clear conscience, and living a peaceful and quiet godly life.
