So That We Do Not Offend Them
Mar 30, 2025 • Jon Paul Dennison
When asked if Jesus pays the temple tax for the elements of the atonement ordinances, Peter tells the collectors He does. But then Jesus tells Peter that the sons are free, which will especially be true in the coming passover as Jesus' sacrifice will render all future atonement ordinances fulfilled.
Yet Jesus tells Him to pay it, which God confirms as Peter would go fishing to find the exact coin to cover he and Jesus' temple tax. To Jesus, doing certain things not to offend is a worthy purpose clause. The gospel is already an offense in and of itself, and we don't have to unnecessarily offend in matters in which we are free. Jesus didn't have to go around refusing to pay taxes because He had a greater hill to die on in front of Him.
